Choosing a faction is always one of the hardest parts of jumping into a new MMORPG. You start worrying about whether your choice will lock you out of a specific overpowered class, ruin your base stats, or force you into a sub-optimal playstyle. Fortunately, Aion 2 takes a very refreshing approach to this choice. The game is built entirely around an absolute balance model. No matter which side you pick, you will have access to the exact same launch classes and gender options, with completely identical skill sets and combat balance.
Instead of punishing your character build, your choice in Aion 2 fundamentally shapes your visual aesthetic, your starting environment, the narrative lens through which you experience the world, and even the servers you play on. The conflict is split between two main playable factions—the Elyos and the Asmodians—while both sides must constantly deal with a dangerous third, non-playable antagonist race known as the Balaur.
The Elyos: Light, Beauty, and Divine Destiny
The Elyos are the humanoid inhabitants of Elysea, which makes up the bottom half of the fractured world of Atreia. Because their home received ample sunlight after the world shattered, they look exactly like what you would expect from a classic high-fantasy "good guy" faction.
  • Aesthetics: Bright, angelic, and pristine. Characters feature fair skin tones, elegant armor designs, and radiant, glowing wings.
  • Environment: Their zones are visually stunning, filled with lush, sunlit green jungles, vibrant forests, and breathtaking natural landscapes.
  • Vibe: Centered around light-based imagery, divine destiny, and a society that presents itself as outwardly benevolent and pure.
  • Why Choose Them: If you love bright, high-fantasy aesthetics and want to spend your leveling journey exploring vibrant, beautiful, and welcoming worlds, the Elyos will be right up your alley.

The Asmodians: Survival, Resilience, and Dark Vengeance
On the flip side, we have the Asmodians. They inhabit Asmodae, the upper half of Atreia. When the world broke apart, their half was cast into dark, brutal, and unforgiving conditions. To survive, their bodies adapted, turning them into fierce, rugged warriors who embrace a much darker path.
  • Aesthetics: Dark and fierce. Asmodians sport a rugged appearance, sharp claws, optional back manes, and striking eyes that glow red when they enter combat.
  • Environment: Their home territories are highly atmospheric, featuring arid badlands, frozen tundras, and dimly lit, moody landscapes that feel dangerous and mysterious.
  • Vibe: Survivalist, resilient, and unapologetically anti-heroic. They aren't evil; they are survivors who have been hardened by a cruel world.
  • Why Choose Them: If you prefer a darker, more atmospheric narrative built around survival against all odds, or if you just prefer a slightly demonic, edgy character design, you will likely find your home among the Asmodians.

The Balaur: The Draconic Threat
You cannot choose the Balaur at character creation, but they play a massive role in how the game actually plays out. The Balaur are a powerful, ancient race of draconic entities who want nothing more than total dominion over Atreia. They serve as the primary antagonists for both the Elyos and the Asmodians.
In terms of gameplay, they are the wildcard. The Balaur are designed to force unique PvE cooperation while simultaneously driving the game's global story. When you are fighting in the shared open-world PvPvE zones, you aren't just looking out for players of the opposing faction—the Balaur will actively ambush and disrupt operations, turning a standard faction skirmish into a chaotic three-way battle.
Faction Gameplay Impact & Server Organization
To help visualize how the factions stack up mechanically, here is a quick breakdown of how things are split:
FeatureElyosAsmodians
Available ClassesAll 8 Launch ClassesAll 8 Launch Classes
Skill DifferencesIdentical skill sets and balanceIdentical skill sets and balance
Server RulesIsolated onto specific faction serversIsolated onto specific faction servers
Endgame MapsShared open-world PvPvE mapsShared open-world PvPvE maps
The most important thing to keep in mind before you create your character is how Aion 2 handles its server structures. Out in the standard world, opposing factions are structurally isolated onto their own specific faction servers. The only time you will truly rub shoulders with the enemy is when you venture into cross-realm battlegrounds or shared endgame PvPvE maps.
Because of this strict separation, you cannot form a guild (Legion) or tackle standard party content with players from the other side. If you and your friends are planning to play together, coordinate beforehand and ensure everyone chooses the exact same faction. Otherwise, you will find yourselves on opposite sides of a very long, very bitter war.
